Ein interessanter Arbeitstag – and a little Cinderella story ...

In der Früh kam ich schon wieder fast ins Strudeln, erwischte diesmal aber wenigstens einen Minibus, auch wenn ich ein paar Minuten im Regen warten musste, gelangte aber (gerade noch) pünktlich im Goethe Institut an, wo ich mich wieder meinen „photo comments“ (und natürlich E-Mails – erste Fotos heim!) widmete. Dann bekam ich meinen ersten „Übersetzungsauftrag“: das Programm für Juli und August von der englischen Version in die deutsche zu übersetzen, damit diese auf die Homepage gestellt werden kann. Ich schaffte es, bis zum Dienstschluss sowohl die Übersetzung, als auch endlich die „photo comments“ fertig zu haben, sogar noch vor vier Uhr fertig zu werden, obwohl ich eine „verlängerte“ Mittagspause gehabt hatte: Ein Deutsch-Sprachschüler lud mich zum Injera-Mittagessen ein (ich bin noch immer darüber amüsiert, dass es genau so gegessen wird, wie es daheim streng verboten wäre: von einem Teller und mit den Fingern). Die Kommunikation lief relativ gut, da er bis er 11 Jahre alt war in England gelebt hatte und perfekt englisch sprach. Am Rückweg bekam ich schon wieder ein Kommentar zu hören, dass ich so schnell gehe... (ja...ich glaube meine Vergangenheit ist einfach nicht abzuleugnen) und zum Abschied versicherte er mir, mich morgen wieder zum Mittagessen abzuholen.

Enthusiastic about my great efforts concerning my shopping yesterday I went to buy a kilo of bananas (3 Birr)on my way home (I really got a banana-fan here, 2 per day minimum!!!), went home, got a shower and dinner and went to the minibus station to go to Kazanchis from where the Hilton Hotel (the piano concert of the Belgian embassy by Piet S., you remember?) was not far away, the last part I went by foot. As there was a little time left, I changed some money in the bank, getting told by the clerk that I have a nice handwriting (ok, that’s something I actually know) before I went to the grand ballroom where the concert took place. Although I had never attended a piano concert before, I really liked it. Moreover I had to inform my neighbour that I am not a member of the Belgian embassy, maybe I did it in such a charming way that he gave me his business-card after the concert: Embassy of the Republic of Liberia, Minister Counsellor/Deputy Chief of Mission… “Phone me anytime you want to visit my embassy, lets keep in contact!”. So this is how contacts are made? We met again at the buffet and kept on talking, about Europe, Africa, Austria… what led to: “You can’t go home by taxi alone at night! The driver could ask for a too high price.” So this lead to a home-shuttle with the Liberian ambassador in his private taxi who asked me again to call him any time on any behalf, evening opening the doors for me himself to get into/out of the car.
All that attention and special treatment I experienced here the last days is so unusual that its sometimes nearly embarrassing to me (as I prefer to agitate in the background usually ;-) ). On the other side its great – of course – to get in touch with so many interesting persons, a unique experience, indeed!
